I am still in a bit of a fog. Maddy went to the see Dr. Mark Revenaugh today and we discovered that she fractured her left front coffin bone wing and also has a bone cyst on her phalanx bone. She was going through the surface tests and Mark kept telling me he was liking what he was seeing. We got to her flex test and she hopped a 3 on her left front. It was not pretty. I opted to get that leg x-rayed as long as we were there. When her coffin bone came up on the screen, I saw it immediately. A big, dark, angry crack down the outside. We were all pretty shocked. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I went into the office and we went over everything and really I don't remember much, I just kept looking at the x-ray.
What I do remember is that she has to stay in her stall for 4 months. This is going to be pure torture for her. I don't know if she can do it without being medicated. He also said the injury was older than eight weeks, but it could be a really old injury that never healed and it just re-cracked. When we got back to our barn, I hated to put her back in the stall. She was so good today about the trailer and her leg wraps and the tests. I just wanted to turn her out with her buddies. The doctor advised that I don't even take her out to graze, as little movement as possible. My poor girl. I am heartbroken. She is such a free spirit, it will be torture for both of us to see her standing in that stall. I just have to take things day by day and see where we go from here.

Man, I'm so sorry!!! I'll be praying that she stays calm and is able to adjust happily to being inside for now. Don't know what else to say - just keep doing the good job you're doing, and hopefully this will heal quickly and you can get back to funner times with her. (((Hugs)))
I'm sorry girl. I hope she gets better soon. Maybe you should try giving her some bread pudding--it always helps you doesn't it?
((HUGS!!)) I'm sooo soo sorry! I hope things go well and she heals alright. How sad and scary! ((HUGS!!)) to you both!
Ugh, that's awful! It's going to be tough, but she'll get through it. It'll be over before you know it. (Fingers crossed)
The 4 months seem unattainable now but will go by better than you think. I'm sorry about this bad news. Lets look forward to Christmas and a healthy filly.
Wow. Not at all the news I thought you would receive. I'm so sorry for both you and Maddy. Hopefully she will get that the stall rest is for her benefit.
I am so sorry to hear about Maddy's injuries. Maybe if you buy her one of those apple licks for her stall and keep hay in front of her she'll adjust to being inside. Just remember this is only a small setback in your journey together. I bought my gelding sick, he had white line disease in both front hooves, he was covered in bot eggs and they told me he had pre-navicular signs. But I couldn't leave him there, so I just made a commitment and he's been the best horse I've ever owned. It will all work out. Maddy will thank you for it, I promise.
Take care,
Dawn
Oh--I'm so sorry. I hope she heals fast. She is lucky to have you to care for her.
I'm so sorry for you guys! I must admit that I am slightly relieved, because when reading your post title, I was afraid that it would be incurable. Four month will be torture, but when the time is up, I think it'll will have been worth it. I hope you can see it that way at least... Sending you lots of hugs!!!
I am so sorry!
I had a yearling that cracked her coffin bone, and she healed as good as new. It was a long time ago (15 years ago) so I don't even remember everything she went through.
In time it will just be a distant memory for you too. And your mare will be as good as new.

Thanks so much for the support. I can always count on my blogger friends to help me through. I am feeling a lot more positive about the situation. I have been doing a lot of reading and planning. Thinking of teaching Maddy how to paint on canvas. I saw a video of a horse doing that once and thought it was pretty cute. And I want to learn more about clicker training. We are going to make the best of this. She is an amazing girl that always does what I ask, so I'll just tell her she just has to get better. Thanks again you guys. Much love:-)
wow! so sorry!!
medicating her to keep her on stall rest isn't as bad as you think it will be. She might need something to just get her through.
the best of prayers for you...
Oh NO!!! I am so sorry. What is the long term prognosis on this?
Oh what a great heart she has! She has been giving you everything she had and more. It makes me so sad.
I know the stall rest will be hard. Maybe you can hang some toys that she can bang at with her head to help occupy her mind. That and maybe see if you can "quiet" her food down some.
I don't know what you're feeding but stall rest can be easier without alfalfa and no type of grain. Valarian root (not sure of the spelling) but it is a natural calmative that seems to work well, I know it's not legal to show on but I think is a main ingredient in Quitex
I've been so behind on my blogging this past week, even missed a post on my blot, MiKael's Mania - Arabian Horses sure felt sad to come back to visit and find this news!
I'm so sorry to read this post. I can see you are looking for the positives and agree with the others that before long it will be a distant memory.
