Fatal Horse Accident

A really sad story came in last night while at work. A Battle Ground woman was found dead after a horse returned to its boarding stable without a rider.

She was identified as Candace "Candy" Morrison, 57. Morrison was a music teacher at Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver.

Another rider found the horse and she immediately began to search for the missing rider, going down a gravel road on Longview Timber property.

About one mile along, the rider found Morrison lying on the road. She had head trauma and was not wearing a riding helmet.

I don't know the lady, but my heart goes out to her family. I think anyone who has experience with horses knows the risks, but we chose to take them anyway. I started wearing a helmet 5 years ago and will never ride without one. I wish she had one on yesterday. It may have saved her life.

I've become lax about wearing mine. So many years of not... Youngsters and trail rides, yes, but I've been slipping when just hopping on Sandy in the arena =(

Hopefully people can understand the importance of wearing a helmet after reading about this very sad event.

This is so tragic and senseless. People who ride bicycles and motorcycles wear helmets yet horseback riders continue to ride a 1000+ pound "flight" animal without a helmet. You have way more control over the bicyle or motorcycle!

A helmet would have saved this woman's life and yet, for vanity, convenience, style, peer pressure (or whatever reason), she did not wear one.

Several years ago, while living in Vancouver, WA, I read a story of another rider that "usually" wore a helmet, but one day did not (nobody will ever know why)and her horse spooked on the short paved distance she needed to ride on to get to a trailhead. Her horse also returned to the stable and by the time they found her she was dead.

P-L-E-A-S-E wear your helmets and if you forget, go back and get it. It only takes ONCE!!!

Thanks for pointing out another example that shows exactly why you should wear a helmet at all times. I wish more people would, and I'll be wearing mine today.
My condolences to her family. What a tragic loss.

Senseless and so sad.
Wear a helmet. Here in Western land even the little kids are up there riding without them. :(
I work as a pedi nurse and we see alot of head injuries from kids who didn't wear a helmet while riding.
Especially in the case of children I want to punch the parents for being NEGLECTFUL and plain idiots.
Sorry. That's how I feel. All you need to see is one gorked kid and....
Adults can make an informed choice. A child however....
I won't ride without a helmet. EVER!

I swear, I should have saved my helmet which the Quig-monster cracked in centrally over the crown when he threw me down headfirst 7 yrs ago as a visual aid! It knocked me out cold & gave me a mild concussion, but could easily have been a fatality w/out it...

My sincerest condolences to her family. May her good soul rest in peace. I believe it would help make it a little less difficult if they take a look at this site. Knowing someone else is going through the same thing helped me cope when I went through the same ordeal.
