Equine Bandana

I asked a good friend who hunts a lot, "How much orange do I need for hunters to see me?" He said "Truthfully.....I would paint your whole horse." So I started thinking about safety ideas and then I started googling. There is a company in Maine called Protectavest that makes all sorts of orange horse safety gear. I went to Ebay and they had one of their bandanas up for bid...I got it for $9.95. I emailed them and asked if they would throw in an orange helmet cover at good price and they did so. I won the item on Thursday and it was on my porch Saturday morning. I had such a good experience working with this company, Mac Mountain Tack makers of Protectavest products...I wanted to pass it on. I think they have developed a really functional, smart product line for trail riders dealing with hunting season. We hit the trail today with my new helmet cover, my orange vest, and her bandana. I felt much more visible and bit more safe out in the woods. If you are curious about how the bandana works, it has a velcro strap that attaches to the headstall. It mesh rests on the neck and another velcro strap goes under the neck. There are two elastic clips that attach to your d-rings on your saddle.

Oooh thanx for posting this! Anything to make yourself less deerlike in our area is extrememely helpful!
At one barn where I rode there were hunters for every season practically. One guy was actually walking down the middle of the trail I was on one time. Just walking, with his rifle, looking for deer...on the totally wrong end of the preserve! The trail I was on was supposed to "off limits" to the hunters. When I mentioned it to him, he basically told me to stick it up my #*!, he would go wherever he wanted to find %^@! deer. That's when I realized the guy was hammered/sloshed/drunk! He could barely walk...and he was holding a gun!!!
That's what scares me...folks like this guy...be careful!!

This is just brilliant! Though a little scary that it is needed. I don't live in hunting country. Glad you and your beautiful horse are prepared!

I also have a bright (fluorescent) pink quarter sheet for trail riding. Think I got it on eBay too. I have my own orange jacket and vest I bought at K-Mart in the hunting department.

Like the bandana, too. Always a good idea to "overdress" in orange during hunting season.

This gives me a different take on the idea of moving to Oregon. I never thought of this problem. I live in New Mexico and we have problems but this sounds worse. I have been thinking of moving to the Clatskanie, OR area and wonder if that is where you were riding or somewhere else. I have been to Clatskanie but never in the fall. (April, May, & August) Could you let me know of any other horse problems in that area? What about the rain and hoof problems? How is the hay situation there? It is hard to get good hay here and getting more expensive all the time. $7 to 10 for a 2 string bale. $20 for a 3 string bale. Of course I don't think you would have the sand colic that is so common here and we feel like we own the physillium companies as much as we pour down our horses.
