Bad Day on the Trail for this Lady

Breaking News, Clackamas County

Scappoose woman injured in fall from horse on Pacific Crest Trail

A Scappoose woman was injured Sunday on the Pacific Crest Trail after a swarm of bees spooked the horse she was riding.

Donna Tewksbury, 70, had been riding with four other women when her horse fell to the ground, knocking her off. When the animal, which was not injured, tried to stand, it stepped on Tewksbury's abdomen.

Tewksbury sustained injuries to her wrist and stomach.

Because Tewksbury couldn't move after the incident, a fellow rider, Alicia Smith, began searching for help around the Frog Lake parking lot. Smith, of Gresham, found a group of hikers who allowed her to use her cellular phone to call 911.

The victim was airlifted by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland about 8:40 p.m. after emergency personnel, including Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, reached the victim on the trail.

On Monday, she was reported in fair condition.

A bad day... no kidding. Horse accidents rarely make the paper around here, but I know they happen, because my orthopedic surgeon told me so.

Just goes to show, no horse is ever really spookproof. I hope the woman is all right. Bless her heart riding out at that age. Hope I can still do it when I'm 70.

I'm glad she seems like she's going to be okay. I give her a lot of credit for still riding out when she is 70 years old, hope I can still do it when I get there.

My friend Alicia was riding with that group last weekend. She says that the woman has beenb released from the hospital and is going to be fine. Very lucky for her. I guess she panicked and kept pulling her horse backwards instead of quickly moving forward when they encountered the bees and the horse stepped off the edge of the trail and went down. When attempting to stand, the horse stepped on her abdomen. That's gotta hurt!! The bees are quite cranky this time of year.
