Winds of Change

A lot of changes coming my way. My good friend Beth is leaving for a job in New York with CNN in two weeks. I have been so focused on helping her with things it is just starting to sink in that she is leaving. It makes me sad. We worked together in Spokane and then Portland. I am really going to miss her:-( I am to become an aunt in June, so have been sewing things like crazy. I feel like when I am not at the barn, I am at a fabric store. Maddy is now "rideable" so I need to get back on track with lesson plans and goals. I am looking at a Circle Y Flex tree saddle next week with hopes that it fits. It is a couple years old, buts hardly used. I have heard good and bad about flex trees. Anyone out there have an opinion? My mom is coming out in a couple weeks...I can't wait. We always have so much fun going to garage sales and antique shops. She is so good for projects around my house and we just have fun. My Dan Cecil clinic was cancelled. I was bummed, but I am going to a Clinton Anderson Clinic in Prineville next weekend. Yeah! It is also the same weekend as the Northwest Horse Expo down in Albany, so I am going to have to miss it. I know I am rambling, but lots of thoughts about what is ahead for me in the next couple of weeks along with a mix of emotions.

It's good to hear that Maddy is ready for action again. :) It must be nice to have your horse back.

I have also heard good and bad about flex trees, but I guess whatever works for a given horse is the best way to go. Certainly Circle Y is one of the better brands, so might be worth checking out.

I personally avoid them. They can still cause pinching and pressure points, despite popular belief. They also lack the structure of the rigid tree (which actually helps to distribute a rider's weight). I have heard of some horses getting sore backs with flex tree saddles because all the rider's weight is centred rather than spread out since they don't have the bars in them, so more pressure per square inch. They also slip more due to lack of structure.

However, I have also heard of people really loving them - especially with wide horses, such as drafts, as they are sometimes the only saddles that fit properly. I think it all depends on the horse and the specific saddle and maker you decide to go with.

Oh darn. Sorry I'm missing the Horse Expo. I'll try to get to it next year.

I don't know who your friend is but I watch CNN all the time.

I also like your new horse photograph. Very nice.

I have a Circle Y Flex Tree with Arabian bars. It was quite an investment for me, but well worth it. It fits both me and the horses just fine. I haven't seen any evidence of rubbing or pinching. My trainer was trying to get me to buy a different saddle, so I had her ride my Flex Tree once it came in, and she said it was more comfortable and better quality than the one she recommended.

As I was bounding around chasing the boys (and feeling it in my back, again,) it got me wondering how YOUR back is doing these days? With the added stress of the upcoming changes, make sure to keep up with yourself there too!

Have fun at the Clinton Anderson clinic!

We've got the Midwest Horse Fair coming up in April. I can't wait to go. There's a Mustang Challenge and the day I'm going Stacey Westfall will be there. I can't wait!
